Due to various economic challenges and huge political shifts throughout history, Latin America has often lagged behind the US and Europe in terms of scientific progress. While other parts of the globe have been at the forefront of developing and stimulating the renewable energy sector, Latin American nations have consistently come up short. However, we’re now beginning to see that change. Here, we’ll look at some of the most promising start-ups which are leading the clean energy charge in Latin America.

Acuacare (Columbia)

This firm was founded by Juan Carlos Guaqueta, for the purpose of applying sophisticated biological treatment to sewage systems, removing contamination, and encouraging the reuse of water in toilets, irrigation and other agricultural systems. In 2014, the start-up won the PepsiCo award for development with purpose, and was listed among IDB’s list of innovative companies. Because the systems engineered by Acuacare don’t rely on chemical elements, the amount of energy it consumes is extremely low, and requires no costly scientific expertise to implement it.

Greentizen (Uruguay)

The concept behind Greentizen is simple, but expected to be very effective. This is an online platform intended for users to suggest and share their eco-friendly actions, and create a contagious channel for different green ideas to be shared and discussed. Users are then rewarded with points which can be exchanged for real prizes in the future. Led by Sylvia Chebi, the idea for this platform came from a conversation between friends interested in raising awareness for sustainable energy. This plays off our modern obsession with social media and sharing content. While large, expensive expos like the Andes Renewable Energy Conference are making great strides, this is the first online and accessible platform where innovators can share their ideas.

Sustentator (Argentina)

This company was launched by entrepreneurs Daniel Nofal and Herrera Vegas, and is devoted to stimulating sustainable, pragmatic solutions within the sustainable energy arena, including wind turbines, solar panels, and thermal tanks. Aside from providing practical and tested solutions to combat the ongoing threats to the environment, this start-up is also expected to do a lot to increase environmental awareness through various platforms and channels.

Greentech (Peru)

One of the biggest topics within the sustainable energy debate is cars; specifically the emissions and toxic gasses they release into the atmosphere. Greentech, founded by Rodrigo Coquis, aims to tackle these issues. His system produces a new additive which can be mixed in with conventional fuel, making for a greener combustion process. This uses the young, emerging science of nanotechnology to produce a fuel that not only performs well, but produces gasses which can be harvested and reused to produce more energy.

All Greenup (Chile)

All Greenup is an app created by Andres and Sebastian Luongo, which is a massive data bank of sustainable energy-related content. It awards prizes to users who encourage elements of a green lifestyle, such as carpooling, recycling, using push-bikes and fair trade. While app development is nothing new in the States and Europe, this is the first one certified by a Latin-American B company.
