What do you think of when you consider the skills you need to run a business? Entrepreneurial prowess, maybe. Strong financial skills, or a competency in IT, perhaps. All practical and important traits that certainly will further your ability to succeed in business. But there are also certain other skills and traits you need to be a successful business person – ones that tend to run much deeper than simply being good with numbers. Business can be a brutal, cut-throat world, and if you’re not made of strong stuff, it can easily beat you. That is why you need to make sure you are mentally prepared before you delve into running your own business, for both your own sake and your company’s sake. Here are a few industry tips and tricks on how you can keep your cool and pull off some great business deals while you’re at it.
Disregard the naysayers
Now, one thing needs to be made clear – this doesn’t mean ‘don’t take any advice.’ Nine times out of ten, advice comes from a good place, and you would do well to listen, even if you don’t always take the advice! But sometimes, in business, you will come across those people who are just trying to drag you down and throw you off. As a fledgling business person, this can be intimidating, and you may find yourself taking the things these people say literally. But step back for a moment and consider where their opinions are coming from. If you have any inkling at all that it could be driven by jealousy or that it could be an attempt to sabotage you, don’t even give it a second thought.

Draw on your inspirations
Throughout the mundanity of everyday life and the stress that inevitably comes with running a business, it can sometimes be easy to forget why exactly you are putting yourself through all this. The danger of becoming disenfranchised with your business is that you lose your passion; and when you lose your passion, your business can easily fall into disarray. Make sure you surround yourself with inspiration at every corner so that you can call upon it in times of need. Use resources such as tug of war with time to enable you to see the bigger picture. Your business may seem pointless when you are in the grip of stress and anxiety, but you will kick yourself if you let it all go.
Stay healthy
We are told by our peers and by the media that if we let our focus slip from our business for more than a second, we are putting it at risk. But while there is nothing wrong with being focused on a goal, you still need to make sure you are taking care of yourself too. Too much work and not enough self-care simply doesn’t work in the long-term, and you may find that you burn yourself out. Make sure you are still finding time to make yourself healthy meals and try to get at least 30 minutes of exercise every day – and plenty of sleep! You will find that you function better and your business will reap the rewards too.
