Your business should be based on good ideas.
It’s a good idea to earn money, it’s a good idea to treat your staff well. Even your business itself might be a good idea.
You might not know it, but there are plenty of bad ideas ready to jump into your head at any given time. Neglecting your workspace is one of them.
If your workspace is cramped, untidy and dirty – it’s going to not only demotivate your staff, it could cause them genuine stress as well. If your office is small, look to relocate to better surroundings as soon as possible.
But what if you’re already in better surroundings? Well, there’s a number of ways you can look after your workspace to ensure you’re getting the most out of your office and on top of that, your staff.
Firstly, you need to make sure that the furniture in your office is comfortable. That’s where you will be based for most of the day, so get ready to spend. This is a necessary expense, so do not avoid it. Good office furniture is bound to increase the productivity of yourself and your staff, so try not to delay here. Vibrant colors will bring a heap of enthusiasm to the workplace and boring furniture will bring out the bore in everyone. Try to be a little different, but don’t go over the top and make your workplace a Pollock piece.
It’s also of great importance to keep your office clean. If there are paper and objects all over the floor, it’s only a matter of time before someone falls and is seriously injured in your workplace. That’s not good. Keep your office tidy, and if you can’t do it yourself, there are plenty of office cleaners you can contact to do it for you. Dirt and dust can also wreak havoc on your employee’s hygiene and health, so don’t let grime slide past you. It’s a priority to get the office clean. Let’s not forget that dust is a natural enemy of your desktop computers, so try not to let it in, otherwise, they will eventually fail. Probably when you need them most, as well.
We know that effective communication makes an effective business, but if your layout in the office is hampering communication, look for ways to change this. Speak to your employees if you aren’t certain (you should be doing this anyway) and enact changes that work for everyone.
Keep your office well-lit. A study found that ‘employees that have windows in the workplace obtained 173% more white light exposure within work hours and slept a median of 46 minutes more a night’. Now, you might need to seek a new office and workspace for this, but the benefits are for more than just productivity. It’s for the sake of your employees.
Creating a positive and happy workplace doesn’t just involve the motivation that comes from you, it’s about keeping an organized office that won’t stunt the happiness of your employees. Treat your workplace well and watch out for the productivity boosts that follow.
