Don’t Just Settle For Employees, Create A Real Team

After making the right decisions in hiring your employees and showing them the ropes, you think you would be all set. Everything should start to run smoothly, right? Of course, that’s not the case. If you want a great team, you have to work to earn it. Sure, the right people matter. But so does the right employer. Here’s what you need to provide them, as well as what you need to watch out for.

Get them motivated

For one, you need to look at how your employees approach their work and how the workplace affects that. It can be as simple as looking at how you arrange the office. However, motivation in the workplace is also about the work culture. About how you might get them to share your goals. To really think of themselves as part of a team. Take a closer look at the environment and how it might motivate or demotivate them.

Ensure they’re part of the conversation

One way to motivated employees is to make sure that they’re engaged employees. Make it easier for them to get involved with the business as whole, not just their roles. A lot of this comes down to how they communicate with management like yourself. So, for example, aim for 100% employee participation in things like team meetings. Do that by shifting how you have them. Give everyone, including yourself, time limits for speaking. Ask them to prepare a topic to bring up. Make sure everyone is part of the conversation.

Help them do their jobs better

Of course, one of the biggest influences on how your employees are doing their jobs is what exactly that entails. How their workflow is. The processes they use to do it. If they’re being inefficient and unmotivated, it might be the work itself doing it. You need to try to help them find more efficient ways of doing it. Of being of more value to the workplace as well as to themselves. Improving workflow can have a real positive boost for your employees.

Get rid of toxic influences

It isn’t all about elements of the workplace that help them, either. Just as important are the elements that can hinder their work. Sometimes the sad truth is that it can be another employee. Identify the toxic employees who negatively affect team cohesion or productivity. Try to address their behavior but, if you can’t, you have to be prepared to cut them off.

Develop them

Perspective is important. Motivation is about developing a culture that allows them to share your perspective. But you have to share theirs, too. Everyone wants to build towards something better than their status quo. If you want to keep your employees and keep them happy, you have to provide that something better. Whether it’s training or the chance at better internal work opportunities, you have to develop them. That’s how you turn employees into leaders.

The work culture. The environment. Their potential. Their co-workers. These are all important factors of your employee’s working experience. Change the elements in that experience and you’ll end up with a much more effective employee.
