A First Impression To Remember

Many people emphasize the importance of appearance in our daily lives. While we’re told never to judge a book by its cover, or that it’s what’s inside that counts, we continue to form our first impressions by what we see. And, who can blame us? Sight is the first sense that hits us when we encounter something new. All we can do is make a judgment from what we’re looking at. Most people admit that first impressions go a long way towards setting their minds for or against something. Fewer people realize that, once their minds are made up, it’s hard to change them. In fact, it’s nearly impossible.

But, does appearance play a part in the success of your startup? We all know that it matters on a superficial level, but a good product shouldn’t have to look ‘pretty,’ should it? Wrong. It very much matters how your product looks. In fact, first impressions matter just as much, if not more, in business. You are, after all, trying to attract a customer’s eye for long enough that they snap up what you offer. And, it’s not only your product that has to look good. You, and your business itself have to look drop dead gorgeous. Here’s how to get your business looking its best.

AIM FOR EYE CATCHING

Before anything, develop eye-catching ways to draw customers attention. The main thing you should focus on is your shop space. There’s a reason shops put so much effort into window displays: it’s the first thing your customers will see. If you have a storefront to play with, make sure you use it. Try to be imaginative with the displays you produce. If your window makes people laugh, chances are they’ll come in to have a look. Don’t be afraid to be tongue in cheek, or do something different! It’s also important to develop a logo that catches the eye. Every business needs a logo. People will come to associate it with you and think of your business whenever they see it. The good news is, this doesn’t have to cost you anything. There are many free logos out there, so take your pick. Again, come up with something original. Bright colors are also worth experimenting with. Nothing works quite so well for an eye-catching effect. It may also be worth doing a little research into what’s already out there. Your logo needs to be different from anything else. If people get you confused with other businesses, you haven’t done your job!

And, today, it isn’t only an eye-catching space you need to consider. While drop in customers were once your only port of call, they’re now only a small part of your success. You also have to think about advertising campaigns, and a website that sticks in people’s minds. You will need to familiarize yourself with web design, on top of everything else. When you’re starting out, it may be tempting to skip these points. But, you’ll fail to make a go of things if you don’t master these additions. And, they need to look as good as any other aspect of your business. If people like the way your website looks, they’re more likely to come to your shop and take a look.

DRESS YOURSELF

You are the first contact most customers have with your business. So, it’s important to dress right. You want to give the impression that you are a competent business person who knows what they’re doing. Smart is always best. Wearing a suit in a business environment is the safest bet. It’s a sure way to let customers know you are serious. Of course, a suit isn’t appropriate in every business setting. If that’s the case, opt for something a little less formal which still looks smart. Wearing casual jeans and a paint-splattered jumper should never be a possibility. That’s true, even if you’re working in a creative field. Leave the dirty overalls in the back room when you’re meeting with customers!

If you have employees, it’s worth considering their dress code too. If they’re working on the front line, they are equally responsible for appearances. State that they should wear formal dress when they join the company, and make sure they do. You don’t have to hand out uniforms to ensure everyone looks good. Although, if you have problems, it may be the easiest way to achieve the image you’re after.

YOUR PRODUCT ITSELF

It’s not sufficient to have a product that works or stands apart from the crowd. People aren’t going to buy something that doesn’t look appealing. It doesn’t matter how good it is. That’s why you need to make sure you’re presenting the most aesthetically pleasing product possible. You need to consider the design and making it look as good as you can. You may need to change the product you have to achieve the goal. Research ways other people have made their products look good. One thing’s for sure; every successful business understands the need to look good. If they’ve made things work, it’s because they’ve mastered the art of catching people’s eyes and imaginations.

As well as the product itself, you need to think about how you package it. Packaging is a taboo subject in this eco-conscious age. It’s an important factor. In fact, tackling packaging may mean that you need to worry less about the appearance of your product itself. Even if you don’t think packaging is necessary, it’s worth looking into. Again, you want something that’s eye-catching. Incorporate your logo to further connect your product and logo in people’s minds.

REAP THE REWARDS

Once you’ve done all the above, you can sit back and enjoy your efforts. A good appearance will go a long way to getting your startup off the ground. The process of creating your image will also help you get a better idea of what you want your business to be. And, it’ll start building that loyal customer base which is so crucial for success.
