Startup Slip-Ups: Marketing Mistakes Your Business Will Pay For!

Do you ever feel like your startup has slipped up? Somewhere, somehow, you’ve done something that’s had a negative effect. A lot of the time, you can narrow this down to your marketing strategy. There are loads of marketing mistakes that can cost a business dearly. Here are three, complete with advice on how to avoid them:

Structureless Marketing

One of the biggest marketing mistakes is also one of the easiest to avoid. Structureless marketing effects plenty of small startups up and down the country. The problem is, we often try and promote our business without expert marketing knowledge. Anyone can go online and read some helpful tips and gain a basic understanding. But, we still struggle to find a structure to our strategy. A good structure will make your life a lot easier. You’ll know your target market, and you’ll know what content to produce and when. If you have serious problems with this, then I suggest outsourcing. It’s relatively cheap to get a marketing expert on board and help devise a good plan for you that you can follow. The structure is important, don’t let your business down.

Outdated Approaches

It’s important that you don’t get confused about the point I’m making here. I’m not so much talking about using old marketing methods. I think there are plenty of old methods that are still fantastic and can be very useful. Instead, I’m talking about outdated approaches to marketing methods. For example, look at when social media marketing first came on the scene. People used it very differently to how they’re using it now. If you aren’t staying up to date with the best ways to use a marketing technique, you’ll struggle. Another good example is link building. Google has re-written so many algorithms to change the face of link building over the last few years. I was reading an article on 44 ways to build links in 2016. And, I can tell you that the ideas were so different to what you’d do three or four years ago. So, if you’re stuck using outdated approaches to marketing methods, your business will suffer.

Lack Of Diversity

A lack of diversity can also cost your business, with regards to your marketing campaign. There are some startups that like to put all their eggs in one basket. They put all their money and attention into Facebook marketing. Or, they spend all their money on print adverts. Either way, this is the wrong way to do things. You have to spread your eggs out over numerous baskets. Do some social media marketing, release a few print adverts too. All the while you’re exploring as many marketing avenues as possible. Diverse marketing means there’s a much better chance of promoting your business successfully. Use digital and traditional methods too, the more, the merrier!

Is your startup making these marketing mistakes? Hopefully, you can now use this article to rectify them. It’s crucial that you know how to market and promote a business properly. Otherwise, your startup will slip-up! One final point I will make is that your budget is very important. Don’t go crazy with your marketing strategy, you can’t afford to spend too much.
